01 Purpose of this policy
This policy explains how URB Cellular processes personal information relating to customers, prospective customers, suppliers, contractors, employees and other persons who interact with the business.
It is intended to support transparency and responsible information management in line with POPIA and other applicable South African law.
02 Personal information we may collect
Depending on the service or enquiry, information may include:
- names, surnames and contact details;
- identity or registration numbers;
- physical, postal and delivery addresses;
- employment, affordability and financial information;
- banking or payment-related information where required;
- application, contract, upgrade and service records;
- device, SIM, network and support information;
- website, cookie, browser and technical information; and
- correspondence and records of interactions with URB Cellular.
03 How information is collected
Personal information may be collected directly from you when you complete an online form, submit an application, visit a store, contact URB Cellular, use the website or provide supporting documents.
Where lawfully permitted, information may also be obtained from MTN, credit bureaux, verification providers, public records, service providers or another authorised source.
04 Why we process personal information
Personal information may be processed to:
- respond to enquiries and provide customer support;
- process applications, upgrades and service requests;
- perform identity, eligibility, affordability and credit checks;
- facilitate RICA and other legally required verification;
- manage customer, supplier and contractual relationships;
- prevent fraud and protect URB Cellular's systems and operations;
- comply with legal, regulatory and contractual obligations;
- maintain business and financial records; and
- send marketing where permitted by law or consented to.
05 Sharing personal information
Personal information may be shared only where reasonably necessary and legally permitted, including with MTN, authorised service providers, operators, verification providers, credit bureaux, regulators, law enforcement, professional advisers or other parties required to deliver a service or meet a legal obligation.
URB Cellular requires service providers that process information on its behalf to maintain appropriate confidentiality and security measures.
06 Information security
URB Cellular applies reasonable technical and organisational safeguards designed to protect personal information against loss, unauthorised access, misuse, alteration or disclosure.
No system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Where a security compromise must be reported under applicable law, URB Cellular will follow the required notification process.
07 Retention and deletion
Personal information is retained only for as long as reasonably required for the purpose for which it was collected, or for a longer period where required or permitted by law, contract, dispute resolution, auditing or legitimate business needs.
When information is no longer required, it may be securely deleted, destroyed or de-identified, subject to applicable retention obligations.
08 Your rights under POPIA
Subject to applicable law and verification, you may have the right to:
- ask whether URB Cellular holds personal information about you;
- request access to your personal information;
- request correction or deletion of inaccurate or unlawfully held information;
- object to certain processing;
- withdraw consent where processing depends on consent;
- object to direct marketing; and
- submit a complaint to the Information Regulator.
Certain requests may be limited or refused where legislation permits or requires URB Cellular to retain or withhold information.
09 Cookies and website information
The website may use cookies and similar technologies for essential functionality, security, performance, analytics and permitted marketing.

10 Direct marketing
URB Cellular may send promotional communications where consent has been provided or another lawful basis permits it. Marketing messages should include a reasonable method to opt out.
Opting out of marketing does not prevent URB Cellular from sending necessary service, application, account, security or legal communications.

12 Complaints and policy updates
Privacy concerns should first be directed to the Information Officer so that URB Cellular has an opportunity to investigate and respond.
You may also lodge a complaint with the South African Information Regulator. URB Cellular may update this webpage and its official policy when legal, regulatory, operational or business requirements change.
